Mtshketa-- Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Mtskheta was the capital of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Iveria from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD founded according to legends by son of Japhet, Mtskhetos and it was here that King Mirian and Queen Nana were converted to Christianity by St. Nino in the 4th century(337).

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where fragments of the robe of Christ are kept.



Beautiful carvings! That's a peacock, above the window

This door is all carved in what looks like celtic shapes and animals. The door and column are blackened from people saying a little prayer or giving a kiss on their way out, out of respect.
